FAQ

  /  FAQ

1. What kind of program do you run to help students?

I believe in a holistic approach to student learning. I focus on nurturing students’ strengths and using their strengths to help them in the areas they need to improve on.  I do not use one particular approach or program but a combination of research-based strategies depending on the needs of my students. This could be in a variety of areas such as decoding, fluency, spelling, comprehension, writing, and math. Therapy sessions are individualized and tailored to the specific needs of each student. One student said that I reminded her of Mary Poppins. When I thought about it, I realized that all educators are like Mary Poppins because we need to have a large tool bag to pull from and select the tools that are the most effective for the students we work with in class.

2. What is one thing parents should do before they come to you?

It would be beneficial to know if their child has had a recent vision and hearing test so that we can rule out vision and hearing problems as factors that could impede learning.

3. What is one advice you would tell parents?

When students come to me, many of them have had educational psychological evaluations done, and they are very worried that something is wrong with their child, especially when the test scores are low.

I want parents to know that their child is perfect the way they are and that my job is to provide strategies that facilitate their child’s learning so that their child can achieve their highest learning potential.  All test scores can be improved!  It is important to instill a growth mindset belief in our children.

4. Could you tell us about your qualifications and background?

I have a Reading Specialist Masters degree and am certified by New York State in Literacy from Birth to Grade 12.  I also have a Ph.D. in Cognitive Studies in Education with a focus on reading research from Teachers College, Columbia University.
